April 3, 2009 – The first Limmud FSU in New York Steering Committee meeting took place April 3, 2009, as members overwhelmingly agreed to lend their expertise and resources to development of a unique Limmud FSU pilot program for young American Jews from Russian-speaking families.

The program, Limmud Shalom Aleichem in the Hamptons, will take place August 9 in Westhampton Beach, New York, and will focus on current and emerging leaders from the New York community.

More than 200 participants will mark the 150th birthday of Shalom Aleichem by gathering to gain a greater understanding of Jewish identity and community, joined by prominent philanthropists, scholars and educators, communal leaders, high-ranking Israeli ministers and Knesset members and entertainers.

Steering Committee members will help Limmud FSU build leadership and organizing committees for the event, and help identify young Russian Jews with leadership potential.

Steering Committee members are important Jewish communal leaders, such as Matthew Bronfman, International Steering Committee Chairman, and all bring the expertise, vision and commitment to this critically important community-building initiative.

Along with Bronfman, the key Jewish community leaders, activists, government officials, philanthropists and others who attended the inaugural meeting of the Steering Committee included Alec Brook-Krasny, Sandra Cahn, Chaim Chesler, Maxyne Finkelstein, Wayne Firestone, Feliks Frenkel, David Harris, Stuart Katz, Valerie Khaytina, Rina Kirshner, David Kislin, Marina Kovalyov, Michael Miller, Marcia Neeley, Gene Rachmansky, Michael Schneider, Steven Schwager, Gideon Taylor, and Diane Wohl.
