Gathering to kick-off an innovative festival and conference, September 25-26 at Ashkelon College and Congress Center, Limmud FSU leadership where joined by several outstanding Ashkelon presenters to talk about this historic happening.

Matthew Bronfman, Limmud FSU, honorary chairman, was joined by Mark Chais, Limmud FSU Executive Committee member, and several Israeli entertainers who will be presenting at the festival: musician, Arkady Duchin; actors Henry David and Lucy Budinchiv; and Lena Kreindlin, Director, Gesher Theatre.

When asked why hold Limmud FSU in Ashkelon, the answers were thoughtful, practical, and philosophical. “We feel it’s important to bring the Russian-speaking Israelis closer to their Jewish heritage and connect them with their own history,” said Matthew Bronfman.

“Throughout Israel, the Russian-speaking population tends to live across the country and they are not necessarily connected to one another as a cohesive group. Limmud FSU in Ashkelon is an opportunity to bring a young generation of émigré Israelis together to explore, to connect, and to talk about Judaism in an open, pluralistic, and welcoming environment,” added Mark Chais.

Svetlana Nemkov, chair of the Limmud FSU in Ashkelon Festival presented the 27-hour continuous program, explaining, “Young people today are searching for themselves. Many explore Eastern cultures and religions. We feel very strongly that the Limmud FSU experience will offer these young Russian-speaking Jews an alternative and help them to realize the value, meaning, and substance of Judaism and help them become more comfortable with their own Jewish Identity.”

Many of the Limmud FSU in Ashkelon sessions will be broadcast on a live feed – log on to www.limmudfsu.org
